Dedication (Consecration) of the Saint Paul Cathedral

1.  What will take place during the dedication/consecration of a Cathedral and altar?
Before the ministers proceed to the sanctuary, a dedication plaque will be unveiled at the entrance of the Cathedral. Then the ministers and clergy will proceed to the sanctuary. The altar is not venerated by the clergy as it has not been consecrated yet. The relic from the tomb of St. Paul will be carried in and placed on a stand. The bishop blesses the water and sprinkles the altar and the people. Following the Opening Prayer, we have the Liturgy of the Word which concludes with the Profession of Faith.
 
2.  PLACING THE RELIC - PRAYER OF DEDICATION
The Dedication/Consecration begins with the singing of the Litany of the Saints. Then, assisted by the deacons, the bishop places the relic of St. Paul at the bottom of altar and says the Prayer of Dedication.
The relic – A stone was obtained from under the tomb of St. Paul at the Cathedral of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome – March 2017.
 
3.  ANOINTING OF THE ALTAR and THE WALLS OF THE CHURCH
The bishop then pours the Holy Chrism in the center and at the four corners of the altar top.
Assisted by other bishops present or by priests, the bishop spreads the Holy Chrism over the entire altar top. Two ministers will then anoint four columns with the dedication candles.
 
4.  INCENSATION OF THE ALTAR and THE CHURCH
A bowl with lit braziers in placed on the altar. Incense is added to the braziers. Incense is added to the hot braziers in the thuribles. The bishop incenses the altar. Two ministers, each with a thurible, then incense the people and the walls.
 
5.  LIGHTING OF THE ALTAR and THE CHURCH
Ministers wipe off the Holy Chrism from the altar. An altar cloth is placed on the altar as well as the altar candles and flowers. Two ministers receive the Light of Christ from the bishop and they proceed to light the altar candles and the four dedication candles mounted on the four pillars. During this time the
Cathedral bells will ring.
 
6.  LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The altar is then prepared. The bishop receives the gifts. Once at the altar, the bishop kisses the altar. Mass continues as usual.
